User's notes

Yellow eyed predatory bird with a brownish ring around neck area looking for prey in our garden. I believe it to be a Collared Sparrow hawk.

I'm pretty sure you are right. Brown Goshawk is very similar, and the size range of the two species overlaps (smaller male goshawk is similar to larger female sparrowhawk). Your photos unfortunately exclude the tip of the tail which is supposed to be square in Sparrowhawk and rounded in goshawk. I'm going on the blue bit between the eye and the beak wrapping around onto the top of the beak, which is shown as a sparrowhawk feature in the CSIRO field guide. Also in your 2nd photo the legs look slender, not stout as in goshawk. But next time, get the tail in the shot!
